Runner Up Book #1: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares I would choose to save this book for its characters and ideas. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a beautiful story that shows the strength of lifelong friendships. As a reader, you get to know each of the four main characters through their distinctive personalities and strong voices. I can really relate to what the characters are going through. They are so well-developed that you start to feel as if they are real people. This book also contains many lessons and morals about life, love, and friendship. For example, one character learns a hard lesson about the consequences of her actions and how they affect others when she makes a spur-of-the-moment decision. All four girls learn that they can find the strength to live separate lives, but that their friends will always be there for them no matter what. I love how each character has a separate story to tell, and how they are put together by switching between four points of view. Overall, I think this is an awesome, well-written story that would be valuable to any civilization.
Runner Up Book # 2: My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult I would choose to save this book mostly because it’s one of the only books I’ve ever read that drove me to tears. When a reader feels that strongly about what they’re reading, you know it’s not an ordinary book. The ideas in the book, however, were also great. I loved how the story was told from many different points of view; it made me better understand how all the different pieces of the plot fit together. I also loved how Jodi Picoult wrote about a controversial issue in way that made it approachable. She added other pieces of the story, like a rebellious teenage brother and a flashback to a high school relationship, instead of just focusing on cancer. The main character Anna was so well-developed that I felt like I knew her, and the way she told the story innocently, yet still maturely made her a complex and memorable character. My Sister’s Keeper is a thought-provoking and creative story, and I think anyone could benefit from the life lessons it teaches.
